Mice and Rat Removal
Mice are a very common problem in homes throughout Michigan. It can be difficult to see mice in your home, but there are some tell tell signs to look out for. Perhaps the biggest give away will be the mouse and rat droppings. You may also hear them, especially at night, moving around in your attic.
How Do Mice Get Into My House?
Mice can fit into gaps the size of a pen! This means that there are often many entry points around your home. They squeeze in through gaps in the outside walls created for utilities, vents and piping, as well as other gaps that might exist. Mice can also crawl up your home's siding and enter though gaps in the attic.
How Many Mice Do I Have?
Mice have many offspring. As a result, the population can quickly spike if the mice are left unchecked. A female mouse will give birth to roughly 40 - 60 offspring per year, and the average litter will contain on 5-7 mice. The gestation period for a mouse generally last between 19 to 21 days and female mice can mate immediately after giving birth which means they can have more offspring in as little as 25 days after the last litter.
How Long Do Mice Live For?
Rather than dealing with a mouse issue many people mistakenly believe the mice will just die quickly and the problem will go away. Unfortunately this is not the case, in fact mice can often live for 2 to 3 years when living inside a house, garage or barn. Mice are also fully developed around 6 weeks of age at which point the females will being to mate. This means that even if the mother mouse dies there will be many more mice ready to continue breeding.

How Do I Get Rid Of Mice?
The most effective way to control mice is through a combination of eradication and prevention. To help eradicate the mice from your home, rodenticides and trapping are the most effective means. Usually these will occur indoors, but can also be used outdoors if needed.
It is important to consider who lives in your home when deciding the best course of action. Families with small children and pets need to be very careful with rodenticides and traps. Often times these will only be used in attics where they cannot be accessed accidentally, or by using locked boxes.
Prevention of further infestations is also key. It is important to examine the house to discover how the mice got it, then seal these and other entry points to prevent further problems.
Rats
Though less common than mice, rats can be a problem throughout Michigan as well. They tend to burrow under slabs of concrete, fallen or stored objects, and in tree roots. This makes controlling rats very difficult compared to mice.
