Mole Control and Removal
The two most common mole species in Michigan are the Eastern and Star Nose Moles.
Habitat
Moles live and tunnel in yards, flowers beds and under roads/driveways and travel mostly underground. Moles create two kinds of tunnels, feeding tunnels and traveling tunnels.
Damage
Moles can cause extensive damage to your yard. They will create tunnels throughout your yard causing raised grass, mounds of soil and the excavation of the roots of tree, shrubs, flowers and grass which can cause these to die. If you have mole damage there is also a possibility that other animals will be using the tunnels. Oftentimes voles, shrews and mice will utilize the tunnels made my moles to move around property.
How Many Moles Do I Have?
The number of moles will vary depending on a few factors. The size of the yard/area will be a factor in how many moles can be supported. Larger lots will commonly be able to support more moles than smaller lots. The number of years the moles have been able to live at the location will also impact this, as whether neighboring properties also have moles.

Traps Vs. Poison
The best and most painless/humane way to remove moles from your yard is through trapping and this method is supported by most University's and professional organizations.
Many fertilizer companies use poison as their method of mole removal. The problem with this is that the moles have to find and eat enough of the poison to die. This often does not happen. Plus, as the property owner, you have no way of knowing the moles have actually gone - with a trap you can see that the mole has been removed.
